Feast of Saint Patrick Day

The St. Patrick’s Festival A Global Celebration of Green

Every year on March 17th, the world turns a vibrant shade of emerald. What started as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has blossomed into a massive, global festival of culture, music, and "craic" (the Irish word for fun!).

Whether you’re heading to the cobblestone streets of Dublin or celebrating at your local pub, the St. Patrick’s Festival is an experience like no other. Here is your guide to the magic of the green.

The Heart of the Festival: Dublin, Ireland

If you want the authentic experience, Dublin is the place to be. In 2026, the festival spans from March 14th to March 17th, turning the entire city into a giant stage.

  • The National St. Patrick’s Day Parade: This is the crown jewel of the event. Expect giant puppets, world-class marching bands from across the globe, and breathtaking performances by Irish street theater troupes.
  • Festival Quarter: Head over to the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks. During the day, it's a family-friendly hub of Irish food and craft; at night, it transforms into a massive concert venue featuring the best of Irish electronic and traditional music.
  • The Greening of the City: As night falls, watch as Dublin’s iconic landmarks like Trinity College and the GPO are illuminated in brilliant green lights.

More Than Just a Parade

The festival is a deep dive into Irish heritage. Here are three ways to truly soak up the atmosphere:

1. The Traditional Céilí

A Céilí (pronounced kay-lee) is a traditional Irish social gathering involving folk music and dancing. Don't worry if you don't know the steps! There are always callers to guide the crowd. It’s the ultimate way to feel the energy of the Irish spirit.

2. Drowning the Shamrock

This ancient tradition involves placing a shamrock at the bottom of your glass of drink. After finishing the drink, you toss the shamrock over your left shoulder for a year of luck.

3. The Flavors of the Feast

You can't celebrate without the food. Look for:

Soda Bread: Best served warm with a thick slab of Irish butter.

Stew & Stout: A hearty beef or lamb stew paired with a creamy pint of Guinness.

Colcannon: Comfort food at its finest mashed potatoes with kale or cabbage and green onions.

Celebrating Worldwide

You don't have to be in Ireland to feel the luck of the Irish! From the Chicago River being dyed a bright neon green to the massive parades in New York City and London, the St. Patrick’s Festival proves that on March 17th, everyone is a little bit Irish.

Fun Fact: The first St. Patrick’s Day parade didn't actually happen in Ireland it took place in America in the 1600s!

Get Ready for the Green

Whether you are wearing a simple green ribbon or going full leprechaun with a top hat and beard, the St. Patrick’s Festival is about community, joy, and celebrating the "Emerald Isle.
